RSV Preventatives & Therapeutics Program

What is RSV?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common and highly contagious respiratory virus. While it often causes mild cold-like symptoms, it is a leading cause of hospitalisation in Australian infants under 12 months of age. Infants in this age group are at the highest risk of severe illness.

Our 2026 RSV Program
Our 2026 RSV Program will run from mid-March to September and offers tailored protection options for pregnant people, newborns and those at higher risk of severe disease.

Our experienced immunisation team, in partnership with Cabrini Health, provides:
Maternal RSV vaccination (Abrysvo) during pregnancy to help protect newborns
Infant long-acting monoclonal antibody (Beyfortus® / nirsevimab) for eligible babies

For further information about our RSV therapeutics program or to discuss with our immunisation specialists, please contact FITS Clinic on 03 9005 8508 or email info@fitsclinic.com.

RSV Vaccination during pregnancy

The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides funded RSV vaccination for eligible pregnant people between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

This vaccine helps protect newborns during their most vulnerable early months by passing protective antibodies from parent to baby before birth. It is available year-round.

For advice about timing and eligibility, please speak with our immunisation team.

Infant Preventative Program

In Victoria, a complimentary infant RSV immunisation program to protect infants most at risk from severe RSV disease will run from 1 April to 30 September 2026.

Under the 2026 program, a free long-acting RSV monoclonal antibody, Beyfortus™ (Nirsevimab), will only be offered to eligible infants and young children. Refer to the diagram below for eligibility criteria:
